About · Editorial standards

Sorted by what’s in the cup, not who paid for the listing.

The Roast Index is an independent directory of British coffee roasters. No paid listings, no affiliate links, no PR placements. If a roaster is here, it’s because someone tried the coffee and thought it deserved a slot.

The bar is low and high at the same time. Low: anyone roasting their own beans in the UK is eligible. High: we only write about it if there’s something worth saying — a sourcing approach, a flavour profile, a story. The editorial note is the part that matters.

How a roaster gets listed

We try the coffee. We read the website. We look at how they talk about sourcing, what they actually charge, whether the people behind it seem to care. Then we write 2–3 sentences. That’s the listing.

Bias disclosure

The editor (one person, drinking probably too much of this stuff) is based in London. London coverage is therefore deeper than the rest of the UK. We’re actively working to fix that. Suggestions for roasters outside the M25 are particularly welcome.

What we don’t do

  • Take payment for placement, ordering, or visibility.
  • Use affiliate links on outbound roaster URLs.
  • Accept free coffee in exchange for editorial coverage.
  • Hide negative opinions. If we won’t list it, we won’t list it.

Found a mistake?

Roasters change. Cafés close. Prices move. If you spot something wrong — a closed shop, an out-of-date price, a missing roaster you love — tell me and I’ll fix it.

Built by someone who drinks too much of it.

The Roast Index is an independent directory of 41 British coffee roasters. No paid listings. No affiliate noise. If your favourite roaster is missing — or you spot something wrong — tell me.
