Origin Notes What we're tasting: Sour Gooseberries, Cherry Sweetness Origin: Kenya, Nyeri, Kieni Wash Station Producer: Mugaga Farmers’ Cooperative Process: Washed Varietal: SL28 & SL34, Ruiru 11 Altitude: 1700 masl About the beans Kieni is located in Nyeri, one of Kenya’s most celebrated coffee-growing regions. The area’s high altitudes and slow coffee maturation create dense beans with bright acidity and a rich, syrupy body. Coffee is grown on small family farms across the slopes and upper plateaus, with each household managing its own trees. Kieni washing station is part of the Mugaga Farmers’ Cooperative, supporting around 1,000 local coffee producers. This fully washed coffee is processed at the mill, where cherries are pulped, fermented, washed, and dried on raised beds for 7 to 15 days before being stored in parchment until export. The careful processing and slow drying help preserve the clarity and character. The washed process is a meticulous one, that keeps the flavours clean and bright, pulling forward the punchy fruit and crisp acidity Nyeri is famous for. We source it from Falcon who work directly with a Kenyan partner at auction, cutting out middlemen to keep things moving faster, fairer, and more transparent. About the name Hi Babes! is named after the iconic duo who once propped up the local corner shop. Their trademark greeting, always a cheerful “Hi babes!” , became part of the fabric of Hackney Wick. The shop has new owners now but that bright hello and the spirit behind it will never be forgotten. This coffee carries the same energy, bright and zingy. From Nyeri, Kenya, grown by the Ndia-Ini Cooperative, it’s bursting with notes of blackberries, blood orange and a brown sugar.
Notes
Kieni washing station is part of the Mugaga Farmers’ Cooperative; the description also later mentions Ndia-Ini Cooperative, creating a producer inconsistency.
